A Town Named For An Actual Fort

Fort Lupton takes its name from a real adobe trading post built in 1836 by Lieutenant Lancaster P. Lupton along the South Platte River, one of several fur-trading forts strung along that river within about 17 miles of each other. The original fort collapsed as a business by the early 1840s and sat mostly abandoned for two decades before settlers resettled the area during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush; a post office followed in the 1860s, and the town formally incorporated in 1890. A reconstruction of the original adobe fort, built using some of the surviving original bricks, now stands at the South Platte Valley Historical Park on the town's northwest side.

Agriculture has anchored the local economy for more than a century, from a sugar beet processing factory that ran from 1920 to 1948 to the farms that still surround the town today. The annual Trapper Days festival, running since 1908 and originally called Tomato Days in honor of that farming heritage, still celebrates both the agricultural and fur-trading history every September. Weld County's oil and gas industry has become part of the local economic picture in recent decades too, sitting alongside the agricultural base rather than replacing it.
